Seagate introduces the extra-large 4TB GoFlex external HDD

Pushing the boundaries of storage, Seagate has introduced the largest consumer-oriented external hard drive – the 4TB GoFlex – capable of storing nearly 2000 HD movies. Making full use of its 7,200 RPM drive speed, it supports a variety connectivity options apart from the standard USB2.0, which include USB3.0 and FireWire 800. Thunderbolt options will also be available soon, once the new GoFlex adapter arrives…

Seagate also has three smaller variants on offer – 1TB, 2TB and 3TB. The 4TB GoFlex drive has been priced surprisingly well, retailing for $249 – decent value for the space available, and speed promised. It also comes with a four-LED capacity gauge for convenience. The device will be available in PC and Mac versions, and will come pre-formatted, and with slightly different connectivity options.

Transfer rates go up to 100MB/sec with a USB3.0 connection, and up to 40MB/s for USB2.0. It also comes with a full suite of backup and security software. Speaking on the launch of the new 4TB GoFlex drive, Patrick Connolly, VP and GM of Retail at Seagate, said:

“Yet another industry first for Seagate, we have reached a new high-capacity in the 3.5-inch hard drive form factor. At Seagate, we are committed to pushing the limits for our customers and will continue to adapt and innovate our products based on customer needs. This latest GoFlex Desk drive offering with its new industry-leading capacity point is a statement of our continued commitment to meet consumer needs.”
