Samsung has rejected reports that it is working on a new social networking website to compete with Facebook. The company said that the reports were completely “groundless” and that it was only planning to expand its sharing services.
“‘[Family Story], like its name, is a family-oriented convergence service that focuses on sharing and storing families’ special moments” Samsung said in a statement today, “but this is far from a ‘Samsung Facebook’ as some are claiming it to be.”
Samsung had launched “Family Story” in February this year. The app, which gives access to family photos, messages and events, runs on Samsung products via a browser-based interface.
Samsung, however, acknowledges it has plans to expand its ‘Family Story’ app to provide its customers with enhanced experiences. But this isn’t a Facebook rival, the company maintains.
Earlier, The Korean Times claimed that Samsung was aiming to expand Family Work as the framework for its Facebook rival. According to KT’s sources, Samsung’s Facebook rival, codenamed as Samsung Facebook, will run across all Samsung products including TVs, cameras and phones.
The report further said Samsung was “buoyed” by the response to its ChatOn application, which runs on iOS and BlackBerry, It also added that the new social network will be based on the FamilyStory photo sharing app.
With 900 millon users worldwide, Facebook is one of the largest social networks on the web. Google has attempted to compete with Facebook with its own social network service, Google . Despite a massive growth initially, Google hasn’t yet caught up with Facebook. Other two major social networks Twitter and LinkedIn are way behind Facebook.
