Rumoured Facebook Vibe music service spotted in site’s code

After a  Skype-powered video chat service, what more should you expect from Facebook? A Facebook music service? Well, the Internet is abuzz with rumours that the social networking giant will soon add their music service – “Vibes”. Hints about the existence of the service were found in references to it in Facebook’s code.

The codes have been discovered by blogger Jeff Rose. He suggests that the installer meant for video chat service entailed installation for two applications called “Peep” and “Vibes”.

Here’s the code in question:

if (paramString.equals(“com.facebook.peep”))
return this.window.getMember(“VideoChatPlugin”);
if (paramString.equals(“com.facebook.vibes”)) {
return this.window.getMember(“MusicDownloadDialog”);
}

Rose further says in his blog, “I searched around to see what this is all about, and it seems that this is an unannounced feature that has yet to be released. The vibes app connects with a music download dialog in the page though, so I’m guessing that with this release we are seeing the seeds for Facebook’s upcoming music offering.”

“It’s too late to look into this further and I still haven’t found the codecs, but anyways, you heard it here first: Facebook Vibes.”

Mashable.com says in its report that Facebook is up to something which is related to music. The report further speculates the app is either meant for downloading or for uploading music into the cloud. However, it also stresses that Facebook Vibe might just be a codename, like Facebook Peep was for video chat.

Facebook must be pulling up its socks after its rival Google launched Google . The Skype-powered video chat service was considered a direct response to Google , which also has a video chat feature built into its social networking system.
