Rumours of the iPad 3 are back in the news. The fresh rumours suggest that Apple is likely to launch the iPad 3 in three to four months. Tech website Digitimes in its report claims that the makers in the supply chain have began delivering parts and components for the new tablets to the OEM contractors.
However, the Digitimes’ report on the iPad 3 is not groundbreaking, considering Apple’s traditional product launch cycle. Apple had launched its iPad 1 in April, 2010, while the iPad 2 was launched in March, 2011. Therefore, we can expect the iPad 3 in the same period next year. It’s notable that Apple had launched the iPhone 4S after almost 16 months (four months later than expected) the iPhone 4 was launched.
The Digitimes sources claim the production of the iPad 2 will remain high in the fourth quarter at 14-15 million units. The iPad 2 production will dip to 4-5 million units in the next quarter, as Apple will pave way for the launch of the iPad 3.
Back in November, it was reported that Apple had partnered with Sharp to develop the iPad 3. Reports said Sharp would provide Apple with the LCD panels for the third gen Apple tablet. The iPad 3 was also touted as the first iPad to feature Apple’s high pixel-density Retina Display technology.
A recent Business Insider report had said that next iPad would arrive in February 2012 and sport a screen with double the resolution of the current model. Citi analyst Richard Gardner in his note pointed out, “There do not appear to be any significant technical hurdles remaining” to the launch of the next-generation iOS tablet.
