Reports: Google to release Nexus tablet within six months

Updated on 20-Dec-2011

If reports are to be believed, Google will be coming out with a new tablet within the next six months. The upcoming tablet is being rumoured to be the first Google Nexus tablet, running on the Ice Cream Sandwich operating system. The rumours of a Google Nexus tablet are triggered by the comments made by Google Chairman Eric Schmidt in an interview to the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sea. Schmidt reportedly said in the interview that Google plans to launch a tablet of the “highest quality” in next six months to better compete with the Apple‘s iPad.

According to SlashGear, the tablet will feature a Siri-like functionality as well. Schmidt told the Italian daily that Google already has a voice recognition software but that it needs to be developed to do things similar to Siri. More details about the new Google tablet were not revealed, and it’s still remains unclear whether the tablet will be associated with Google’s Nexus brand. It may be recalled that Google had adopted a similar strategy while partnering with Motorola to launch the Xoom, the first Honeycomb tablet.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus is the first smartphone to carry ICS

Google has previously launched Nexus brand with limited number of phones. HTC-manufactured Nexus One was popular for its processor speed, while Samsung Nexus S came with new features such as NFC. The latest, the Google Nexus debuted with the ICS. Reports of the new Google tablet follow reports of Apple’s new iPad, which is expected to be coming out very soon.
