We are back again with another Artificial Intelligence (AI) story but this time it’s closer to home. You are living under a rock unless you are unaware of the AI frenzy that the world is witnessing at this moment. The development in the AI sector has skyrocketed and everyone everywhere is just talking about AI and tech companies are not letting it go. Each is in a way trying to get a headstart in the AI space. But today we are going to talk about Hanooman, an Indian initiative that could give us an Indian alternative to ChatGPT that could even understand regional languages.
What do we know about Hanooman so far?
At the Nasscom IT industry conference happening in Mumbai, the BharatGPT group, backed by the Government of India and Reliance Industries, affiliated to eight universities including IIT Bombay, gave a glimpse of its large language model (LLM). This is the first private-public partnership of its kind that the country has seen. The teaser played during the event showed users interacting with the model in regional languages such as Hindi, Tamil, etc.

This model is called Hanooman and once successful it can become India’s card in standing strong in the current AI race. BharatGPT plans on focusing the model to work using 11 local languages in four main fields: health care, governance, financial services, and education.
Now what can Hanooman do? The AI model Hanooman will be quite similar to ChatGPT one could assume and will offer speech-to-text capabilities. This will make this model far more user-friendly.

Once the AI model is successful and running, Reliance Jio will make customised models for different uses, as informed by Ganesh Ramakrishnan, chair of IIT Bombay’s Department of Computer Science and Engineering.
