Your computer seems to be affected by W32.Opaserv.ad.Worm, which exploits a security vulnerability in 9x/Me systems, allowing it to access shares without the password. If Quick Heal is unable to remove the virus, you could try using another anti-virus, or cleaning the virus manually.
To do a manual clean, first boot your machine in Safe Mode and manually delete any files that Quick Heal detects. If you’re unable to delete files because they are in use, use a freeware such as Unlocker (http://ccollomb.free .fr/unlocker/) to get rid of them. Next, in the Registry Editor, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_ MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsRun, and remove any entries that point to “speedy.bat”, “putta.com”, and any files that Quick Heal identifies as a virus or as any other kind of suspicious file. Repeat this under HKEY_CURRENT_USER.
Next, go to Start > Run, type in “sysedit”, and go to the win.ini window. Look for a line similar to “run = speedy.bat”, and remove everything after “run=”. Reboot your system after these changes, and then apply the patch available at www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS00-072.mspx to fix the vulnerabilities exploited by the virus.
Damn Drivers!
I use a Dell Optiplex GX280 Desktop. I wanted to use a modem, and I ordered a PCI raiser card (A card with additional PCI slots). I installed my modem on Windows XP SP1, but after installing the default driver, I got an error message saying, “Your hardware won’t work properly until reboot.” When I restarted my computer, I got a blue screen error saying “IRQ_LESS_OR_NOT_EQUAL.” What does that mean? In Windows XP, IRQ conflicts are not a problem, like they once were in Win9x, as one of my other systems with the same configuration doesn’t have this problem.

Your problem seems to be directly related to the default drivers for your modem. Since you haven’t mentioned the manufacturer and model, you might want to check if Windows has included your product in the Hardware Compatibility List. If it isn’t supported, you can install the drivers for your modem from the manufacturer’s Web site, or visit www.driverguide.com for updated drivers for your card.
Silent Movies
I have a Pentium 4 1.5 GHz running Windows XP. I recently bought a Samsung 16x DVD-Writer. It functions well while burning, but when I play movies, there is no audio. I have no problems with the video though.

To make sure the audio settings are correct, look for settings such as digital output, SPDIF, and 3D audio support in your player and sound card driver software. Disable them one by one. If the problem persists, you will need to install the proper audio codecs. You can also try free players with inbuilt codecs-such as VLC Media Player-which is distributed on our CD every month.

I have a Pentium 4 2.60 GHz processor on an ASUS P4XP-X motherboard. Recently, while performing some tests, I got a message: “Warning: Disk write caching is disabled.” What is disk write caching, and how can I enable it? My hard disk is a Seagate ST340014A.

In disk write caching, instead of writing data immediately to disk, a “note” is made to finish the task later, which could be when your PC shuts down, or during an idle period. Enabling it could improve disk performance, but there’s a possibility of lost or corrupted data if Windows does not shut down properly.
You can enable disk write caching by going to Control Panel > System > Hardware tab, and clicking the Device Manager button. Then click the plus sign next to Disk Drives, right-click on your drive, select Properties, click the Policies tab, and check the box next to “Enable write caching on this disk”. For OSes other than XP and 2000, instead of the Policies tab, there could be a Settings tab where the disk write caching option would be located.

Drivers Again…
I bought an AMD64 3000 939, an MSI RS482, and an XFX 7300LE. Can you tell me what version of Pixel and Vertex Shaders my card has? I’m facing peculiar problems in some games. In VRally, I experience a lot of screen corruptions. While the game runs without any jerks, no frames are rendered properly. In Far Cry, when I started the game at very high settings, it ran smoothly, but there were plenty of graphics bugs like a black background with texture corruptions. When I lower the settings a bit, I don’t come across as much texture corruption.
Games like Need for Speed: Carbon, Just Cause, Scarface, True Crime 2, along with most new games, run fine without any problems whatsoever. What could be the problem with those two games?

Your XFX 7300LE has Pixel Shader 3 and Vertex Shader 3, but this isn’t the cause of your graphics-related problems. They are likely related to your graphics drivers, or bugs in the games themselves, since it happens only with two of your games. Make sure your detonator drivers are up-to-date: you can get the latest version from www.nvidia.com. Far Cry is generally known to have a lot of bugs in the earlier versions; consider upgrading to the latest (1.40) from www. ubi.com/US/Downloads/Info.aspx?dlId=691.
It’s Wormed Its Way Through
I have an HP D220 MT (PD795PA), Intel Pentium 4 2.80 GHz, and 504 MB of RAM with XP Pro SP2 installed. I get a message at every time I log on to Windows: “Windows cannot find C:WINDOWSsembako-cnzjlii.exe. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again…” What’s up?

Your system is infected with the W32/Brontok-M worm; the error message is due to the infected file being either missing or relocated. Boot up your system in Safe Mode and run a full anti-virus scan on all your hard disks. Delete / clean any files that have been infected with the worm.
If the startup entry remains, and you still get the error, try and find “sembako-cnzjlii.exe” somewhere in the Registry. Delete all values pertaining to it in the right hand pane, but be careful not to delete any keys on the left, or values that don’t point to the malicious .exe file.
A Dud Of A Download!
I downloaded Windows Vista (vista_5600.16384.060829-2230_x64fre_ client-lr1cxfre_en_dvd.iso.zip) from the Microsoft Web site, and unzipped it to get the vista_5600.16384.060829-2230_x64fre_client-lr1cxfre_en_dvd.iso.dlm (size: 3.59 GB) file. But I can’t open it because .dlm is an unrecognised extension.
I tried Microsoft File Transfer Manager (FTM) to open the .dlm file, but got a Visual C runtime error. And when I tried to open the file using Ultra ISO, I could only see a Readme with the line “This disc contains a ‘UDF’ file system and requires an operating system that supports the ISO-13346 ‘UDF’ file system specification.” Next, I removed the .dlm extension from the unzipped file to make it an ISO file, which I burnt onto DVD using Nero Express, but after burning it, I can’t see anything on the DVD (although I’d gotten a successful “burnt” message).

The fact that the extracted file is coming in with the .dlm extension is abnormal. Also, UltraISO showing only one file (the Readme) suggests that the download is corrupted. Re-download the file. We’d suggest using a good download manager such as FlashGet, which you can find on this month’s CD.
So Who Am I?
I run Windows XP SP2. I’ve installed Nokia PC Suite for my Nokia 3250. When I browsed my memory card reader, I didn’t get the folder options menu at all. When I go into Help and Support and go into Folder Options, I get an error saying, “This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator.” But I am the system administrator!

It looks like your Folder Options menu has disappeared either because of utilities that make changes to the registry, or because some other user has set this restriction. To fix this, in the Registry Editor, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftware MicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPolicies, there, look for a value called NoFolderOptions, double-click it and change the value from 1 to 0. Do the same in HKEY_CURRENT_USER. You should now be able to see Folder Options under the Tools menu in Windows Explorer.
Who’s That?
There’s always a user called “ASP.NET” on my XP Welcome screen. I tried deleting the user, but doing so also deletes some of the files in My Documents. I cannot even log in to that user account, as it is password-protected. How do I get rid of it?

First, there’s no need to worry about this “user”: neither is it a virus, nor will it interfere with your work. It’s created when you install the Microsoft .NET framework. 
If you want to prevent it from showing up altogether in the welcome screen, you can add ASP.NET to the special accounts list. To do this, in the Registry Editor, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftware MicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersion WinlogonSpecialAccountsUserlist. Right-click in the right pane and select New > DWORD Value, enter “ASPNET”, and press [Enter].
Toneless?
I have a D-Link modem that reports that it does not detect a dial tone when I try to connect to the Internet. What could be the problem?

You first need to check whether the dial tone is available at the telephone outlet. If you have a dedicated line for your modem, then you must connect it to a telephone and make sure that a dial tone exists.
Next, you need to disable “Wait for dial tone.” To do this, open the Control Panel, double-click “Phone and Modem Options”, select the Modems tab, select the modem, and click Properties. Under the General tab, deselect “Wait for dial tone before dialing”.
If that doesn’t work, remove the phone jack from your modem and reconnect it. If that doesn’t work, check both ends of the phone cable to make sure the connection is good. Use a different cable to connect your modem to the telephone outlet.
Go through the modem manual to see if your modem requires an initialisation string. If it does, try setting those.
