After Foxconn, Quanta is considering setting up a manufacturing base in India for Apple products.
Quanta Computer Inc., the Taiwan-based PC manufacturing and assembly giant, is considering setting up a manufacturing base in India for Apple products. Although no specific plans have been announced, its vice-chairman C.C. Leung has told Reuters that data is being gathered and all factors are being analysed for the feasibility of setting up manufacturing units in India.
The move comes soon after Foxconn, the company that manufactures Apple’s iPhones and iPads, revealed plans to set up manufacturing units in Maharashtra. Although no firm commitments have been given by the company, Foxconn stated that it plans to set up as many as 10-12 units across India, by 2020.
Such an initiative will probably see Apple products, which have always been sold at a high premium in India, go down in price. Presently, Apple’s devices are among the most expensive in their respective categories. Such a move can increase Apple’s market share in India, and directly challenge rivals Samsung at product pricing in the country.
Quanta is the main assembler for the recently unveiled Apple Watch, iPods, MacBooks and iMacs. It is presently looking at the possibility of sustaining manufacturing and assembly units in India, availability of enough transportation, logistics and access to ports at suitable price, and the entire supply chain structure in India.
