Qualcomm announces WiFi SON support and other technology at CES 2016
Qualcomm and its partners’ announcements at the ongoing CES event pertained to consumer electronics, automobiles, IoT, and healthcare
Qualcomm and its third party customers/partners have made a number of important announcements at the ongoing CES 2016 event. These pertained to new and improved technologies, as well as new products in the field of consumers electronics, automobiles, IoT, and health.
During the event, Qualcomm unveiled a number of connectivity related products and technologies. The company launched Wi-Fi SON (Self Organizing Network), which is the industry's first comprehensive set of differentiation features for networking products. Qualcomm’s partners introduced a number of their own products into the market. LeTV’s Le Max Pro is the first smartphone to be powered by Qualcomm’s latest flagship processor, Snapdragon 820. Lenovo showcased its X1 portfolio of tablets and laptops, while Acer TravelMate P648 series of notebooks. Lenovo and Google are scheduled to reveal the first Project Tango enabled smartphone.
In addition Qualcomm also announced a number of products related to the automobile sector. It said that the company's Snapdragon 602A processors will be commercial available in Audi’s 2017 vehicles. The Snapdragon 602A is the company's first automotive grade infotainment chipset. One of Qualcomm’s partners, Mitsubishi Electric also announced that the company is creating a new automotive platform based on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processors.
In the IoT segment, the company has added the Snapdragon X5 LTE modem to its range of modem solutions. The Snapdragon X5 LTE joins the MDM9207-1 and MDM9206 chipsets with pin-to-pin compatibility and onboard ARM CPU for running applications directly on the modem. It also introduced a Smart Home Reference Platform based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 212 SoC. In addition, Qualcomm’s subsidiaries demonstrated a commercial drone based on the Snapdragon Flight platform.
Qualcomm also announced that it was expanding its global connected therapy management collaboration with with Novartis. Novartis will use Qualcomm Life’s connectivity solutions to power its next-generation of connected ‘Breezhaler’, an inhaler for those suffering from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. Qualcomm’s partner, First Response, unveiled the first ever Smart-enabled pregnancy test.
