Qualcomm 810 chipsets may provide 7 GBps data transfer speeds
The service is not expected to be available before mid-2015 though.
Smartphone and tablet chipset maker Qualcomm has reportedly completed its acquisition of a firm called Wilocity. This is a company that has been involved in the development of high speed 60 GHz wireless chipsets, which are based on the IEEE 802.11ab standard. This technology is known as WiGig and is capable of offering data transfer speeds of up to 7 GB per second over a distance of around 10 metres. This is much faster than what we usually get over WiFi networks nowadays.
Further, the company is reportedly going to integrate the WiGig standard into its ARMv8 Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 SoC. This would be part of Qualcomm’s new tri-band WiFi solution, which integrates the traditional 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz 802.11b/g/n/ac wireless networking with the WiGig band. The user would hence be able to enjoy a multi-speed system, in which speeds would vary based on their distance and the type of device they are using. Don’t get too excited though, as the Snapdragon 810 processors won’t be available in the market till the mid-2015 period. In addition, reports have also said that other chipset makers are also integrating similar technologies into their SoCs.
While WiGig does offer data transfer speeds above the current range, the system does not support ranges that are available on cellular networks or even traditional WiFi networks. This means that even with its integration, you won’t be getting super fast data transfer speeds everywhere.
