PTC announces Vuforia Studio Enterprise at LiveWorx 2016
HIGHLIGHTS

With this offering PTC aims to democratise AR in the enterprise space by utilising codeless authoring and publishing

Vuforia is a powerful new tool for authoring and publishing augmented reality experiences. It was originally codenamed Project ThingX and is now a finished product. Vuforia Studio Enterprise is integrated with PTC’s Creo 3D CAD software and ThingWorx Internet of Things (IoT) platform. This allows it to quickly and easily add augmented reality components to connected devices or equipment, such as factory equipment, solar panels and medical devices. It will now be available as a part of the Vuforia Studio Pilot Program.

The Vuforia Studio Enterprise delivers a set of components that allows anyone to create an augmented experience, without the need for any coding knowledge. Jim Heppelmann, president and CEO of PTC said, “By Integrating 3D CAD data from tools like Crea and IoT data from ThingWorx, Vuforia Studios allows organizations to easily develop augmented reality experiences that enable enterprises to better create, operate, and service their connected products.”

Augmented reality is one of the fastest growing technology segments today. But its growth and adoption is being hindered due to the lack of tools for content authors that can leverage or use existing 3D assets. Vuforia Studio tackles this challenge by enabling the development of new experiences for creating, operating, and servicing connected products. Vuforia Studio will provide all of the components that will be needed, giving builders a simple solution to develop an augmented reality experience, without actually needing the deep programing knowledge or know-how that would normally be needed when it comes to augmented reality technology.

By allowing companies to use existing 3D assets from PTC’s Creo 3D CAD software, in addition to other popular 3D modeling tools, Vuforia Studio democratizes augmented reality in the enterprise. You can combine data from existing assets through Vuforia Studio for easy-to-create animations and sequences. This includes integration of the product’s IoT sensor data as well, such as temperature and operating speeds, thanks to ThingWorx. All of this is done through a suite of technology components that simplifies the development of the AR experience. These components include:

  • Vuforia Studio Enterprise – Vuforia Studio prives a user friendly interface which allows for codeless authoring and publishing of AR experiences. These experiences can incorporate or make use of 3D CAD data and ThingWorx IoT data, which can be identified by the ThingMark™, a code that is unique to the object or product.

  • Vuforia Experience Service – The Vuforia Experience Service is cloud-based and lets you publish your created AR experience with just a few clicks. There’s no limit to the number of experiences you can create, providing a scalable solution for enterprise-wide augmented reality publishing.

  • Vuforia View Enterprise – Vuforia View Enterprise is an app that scans ThingMarks, after which it will prompt the user to select an associated experience. The selected experience is then downloaded and launched.

PTC is looking to capitalize on the potential that augmented reality has in the enterprise with Vuforia Studio. Vernon Turner, VP and fellow, IoT, IDC, said, “The applications of augmented reality in the enterprise are practically limitless, and a powerful tool like Vuforia Studio that combines augmented reality, Internet of Things services, and 3D modeling will register as a standout option as organisations build out their augmented reality strategies.”

Availability: PTC announced at LiveWorx that the Vuforia Studio Pilot program will be available to customers interested in adopting the Vuforia studio. In order to join the Vuforia Studio Pilot program, you’d need to contact a PTC sales representative. General availability for the Vuforia Studio will be announced later in the year.
