Keep reading to know how it all happened and how you can avoid falling for such scams.
Malti Sinha, a resident of Yarapur in Patna, ordered a mixer machine online on February 6. The product was supposed to be delivered by February 12, but when it didn’t arrive, she decided to contact the company. She then searched for the company’s contact number on a popular search engine.
The person on the other end of the call told her that her address was not updated on their site and asked her to update it, reports TOI. After this, the scammer withdrew Rs 52,000 from her bank account.
Avoid searching for customer care numbers online: Always visit the official website of the company for contact details. Fraudsters often list fake numbers on search engines.
Be cautious of urgent requests: Scammers create a sense of urgency to trick people into making hasty decisions.
Verify before making transactions: If someone asks you to update payment details or click on a link, double-check with the company through official channels.
Report suspicious activity: If you suspect fraud, immediately contact your bank and report it to the cyber police.
Online fraud is increasing, but by staying alert and cautious, you can protect yourself from falling victim to scams.
