The Permanent Account Number (PAN) is an essential document for most of us, from filing taxes to opening a bank account. Imagine if your PAN card became smarter, faster, and even more secure. That’s exactly what the government has planned with the new PAN 2.0 Project.
Recently, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved this project, with a budget of Rs 1,435 crore. This marks a major step towards making tax-related services more efficient and accessible for everyone.
PAN 2.0 is an upgraded version of the current PAN/TAN ecosystem, designed to enhance the digital experience for taxpayers. It’s an e-governance initiative aimed at re-engineering the way taxpayer registration services work. With PAN 2.0, both the core and additional PAN-related activities, including PAN validation services, will undergo a tech-driven transformation.
The PAN 2.0 Project will offer several benefits to taxpayers, making it not just an upgrade but a major step in the Digital India movement:

One of the exciting features of PAN 2.0 is the introduction of QR codes on PAN cards. The government aims to make PAN as a common identifier across all digital systems of governmental organisations.
By integrating PAN into more digital platforms, the PAN 2.0 Project strengthens the government’s Digital India mission.
