OpenAI is reportedly gearing up to launch its next AI model, Orion, by December. Unlike the previous models, GPT-4o and o1, Orion won’t be available to the public right away. Instead, OpenAI likely plans to give access first to select companies it partners with, allowing them to create their own products and features using the new technology.

Microsoft, OpenAI’s key partner for deploying AI models, might be preparing to host Orion on Azure as early as November, reports The Verge. While Orion is considered the successor to GPT-4 within OpenAI, it remains uncertain whether it will be labelled as GPT-5 when it’s released.

An OpenAI executive earlier hinted that Orion could be significantly more powerful than GPT-4, with some estimates suggesting it could be up to 100 times stronger. This model is distinct from the o1 reasoning model that OpenAI unveiled in September. The company aims to integrate its various large language models (LLMs) over time, ultimately striving towards what could be called artificial general intelligence (AGI).

Interestingly, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman teased the upcoming release in a post on X. In the post he said that he was “excited for the winter constellations to rise soon.” When asked ChatGPT o1-preview what Altman’s post is hiding, the chatbot said that he’s hinting at the word Orion, which is the winter constellation that’s most visible in the night sky from November to February.

The launch of Orion comes at a pivotal moment for OpenAI, which recently completed a $6.6 billion funding round, prompting the company to restructure as a for-profit entity. Additionally, OpenAI is navigating a period of significant staff changes, with several key executives, including CTO Mira Murati and Chief Research Officer Bob McGrew, announcing their departures.

As we await the official unveiling of Orion, many are eager to see how this new model will shape the future of AI technology.
