GPT-4o image generation is currently rolling out to Plus, Pro, Team, and Free users as the default image generator in ChatGPT.
OpenAI has introduced GPT‑4o image generation, making it easier for users to create high-quality visuals directly within ChatGPT. According to OpenAI, GPT‑4o image generation “excels at accurately rendering text, precisely following prompts, and leveraging 4o’s inherent knowledge base and chat context—including transforming uploaded images or using them as visual inspiration.”
GPT‑4o image generation capabilities:
- Accurate text in images: Unlike many AI models that struggle with text placement, GPT‑4o can add precise text elements, making it useful for labels, posters, and presentations.
- Multi-turn generation: Users can refine their images through conversation. For example, if designing a character, the model can maintain consistency across different versions.
- In-context learning: GPT‑4o can analyse and use details from uploaded images.
- Photorealism and style: The model has been trained on a wide range of styles, enabling it to create or transform images convincingly.
“Our model isn’t perfect. We’re aware of multiple limitations at the moment which we will work to address through model improvements after the initial launch,” OpenAI explained.

OpenAI has implemented strong safety measures to prevent misuse. All generated images include C2PA metadata, marking them as AI-generated. Additionally, OpenAI has developed an internal search tool to help verify if an image was created by GPT‑4o. The company also blocks harmful content, including explicit images and deepfakes. These efforts align with OpenAI’s broader commitment to responsible AI development.

Availability
GPT-4o image generation is currently rolling out to Plus, Pro, Team, and Free users as the default image generator in ChatGPT. It will soon be available to Enterprise and Edu users. Sora users can also access it.
