I am kind of tired of waiting for Apple to drop some AI features, and so is my iPhone. All of us have been eagerly waiting for AI updates from Apple, and the ‘Let Loose’ event did offer some hope. Now, everyone is awaiting the WWDC, where Apple is expected to announce new AI features. Rumours also suggest that Apple is trying to partner with OpenAI for its new AI features. Other rumours also said that Apple was trying to rope in Google too. But between all of this, Microsoft is kind of worried. Let’s find out.

Apple and OpenAI deal

The report further reveals that Apple’s machine learning team met with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and his team around last year’s WWDC. We don’t know what exactly happened during that meeting but the report suggests that Altman eventually decided to give Apple employees access to OpenAI APIs for internal testing.

The report reads, “In those tests, Apple engineers connected ChatGPT to Siri, creating impressive demonstrations of Siri handling more complex queries than usual, including better understanding the context of what users were saying”. Evidence of Apple using these APIs was even found in iOS 17.4 code by 9to5Mac. Rumours suggest that Apple wants to enhance Siri with ChatGPT’s abilities.

Why is Microsoft so worried?

Apple OpenAI Microsoft

Well, Microsoft also uses OpenAI technology for its Copilot features and provides data centre support for ChatGPT. So their partnership is already in place. Now, the Apple-OpenAI partnership is making Microsoft skeptical. The report reveals that Microsoft’s Satya Nadel had a meeting with Altman where he shared how he felt that its server demand could potentially increase in the future owing to this partnership. He even asked for a share of future OpenAI profits in return for its $13 billion investment in the startup.
