OpenAI departures continue: Another executive leaves company after Mira Murati
A few weeks ago, Mira Murati, the CTO at OpenAI resigned from OpenAI.
Now, Tim Brooks, who was also working at a senior role for OpenAI's Sora, is now leaving.
After OpenAI, he is now going to Google's DeepMind.
A few weeks ago, Mira Murati, the CTO at OpenAI resigned from the company. She also served as interim CEO when Sam Altman was fired earlier this year. Murati was a pivotal figure at OpenAI, it has been only a few weeks and now we are hearing that another key figure is leaving OpenAI. We are talking about Tim Brooks, who was also working at a senior role for OpenAI’s Sora. Brooks teamed up with William Peebles to co-develop the famous OpenAI’s video generation system “Sora.” Sora was announced by OpenAI in February 2023 and it still hasn’t rolled out due to some technical issues.
Tim Brooks announced that he is leaving OpenAI on X along with expressing gratitude for his two years at OpenAI. After OpenAI, he is now going to Google’s DeepMind, which is also a leading AI research lab that focuses on creating AI systems with advanced learning capabilities. At Google DeepMind, Brooks will contribute to video generation technologies and “world simulators.” These simulators are AI-powered models that can create and run virtual worlds, which could be used in games, movies, or training AI.
At OpenAI, Brooks was co-leading Sora team. He helped guide the project and led the training of large models for creating videos. Sora was launched in February 2023 but faced technical problems like slow processing speed. It was taking over 10 minutes to generate a 1-minute video. This made it less competitive is we compare it to faster tools from companies like Luma and Runway.
Brooks is leaving OpenAI when the company is working to make Sora better and fix these issues. They are trying to improve its speed and performance to stay competitive in video generation. Despite these efforts, Brooks has decided to move on, likely looking for new opportunities at DeepMind, where he can continue working on video generation and AI.
