India is witnessing a rapid surge in artificial intelligence (AI) adoption, a trend that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman finds “amazing to watch.” Altman took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his admiration for the country’s growing AI usage.
“What’s happening with AI adoption in India right now is amazing to watch. We love to see the explosion of creativity—India is outpacing the world,” Altman posted.
His remarks come at a time when OpenAI’s tools are seeing a significant rise in popularity across India. A major reason for this surge is the newly introduced image-generation feature in ChatGPT. People are using this feature to transform their photos into animations inspired by Studio Ghibli. This feature is drawing in a massive wave of new users.

The sudden increase in traffic has also put pressure on OpenAI’s systems, leading to temporary rate limits and potential delays in upcoming product launches.
Acknowledging these challenges, Altman noted that such rapid growth could result in “stuff to break.” He posted, “we are getting things under control, but you should expect new releases from openai to be delayed, stuff to break, and for service to sometimes be slow as we deal with capacity challenges.”
