Reports that US' National Security Agency (NSA) spied on the Bhartiya Janata Party has drawn sharp reaction from the government.
Following reports that US' National Security Agency (NSA) spied on the Bhartiya Janata Party, the Indian government has reportedly summoned the top US diplomat to raise the issue. Describing the alleged snooping “totally unacceptable”, the government sought an assurance that it won't be repeated.
However, there's no information on who was the US diplomat summoned by the external affairs ministry. Information and broadcasting minister Prakash Javadekar said, "… we will take up the issue after we cross check facts."
The development comes a day after NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden released a data that revealed BJP was among a list of six non-US political parties globally that the NSA had the permission to covertly spy upon.
The revelation, as expected, triggered another round of controversy around the surveillance actions of the NSA. It may be recalled the Indian government had raised the issue with the US last year when reports about the NSA spying emerged.
While the previous government had played down the alleged NSA snooping, the current BJP-led government is likely to take a hard line stand.
