Nokia 7 Plus joins Nokia 6.1 and Nokia 8 Sirocco to get ARCore support
The SDK works fine when installed on the Nokia 7 Plus, however, there is no official communication from HMD Global and Google regarding the support.
Google has been very serious when it comes to the development and extending support of its Augmented Reality platform ARCore to mid-range and flagship smartphones. Recently, Google made the latest version available to several smartphones with the number of compatible phones reaching 39. The list did not include HMD's Nokia 7 Plus but GSMArena has found that the platform is supported on this Nokia device that was launched in March.
The website reported that if you try installing the ARCore app from Google Play Store on Nokia 7 Plus, it works fine. However, there is no statement from either Google or HMD Global on this development. We even checked the list but we did not find any changes. According to the official list, there are only two HMD devices — Nokia 6.1 and Nokia 8 Sirocco — that support ARCore.
Recently, XDA Developers dug around version 1.3 of the ARCore SDK and found that a few more devices will be compatible with this version when it is made available. These include the new Honor 10, OnePlus 5T and more.
For those unaware, ARCore is the successor to Google’s Project Tango, which was unveiled in 2014. However, only two devices with Project Tango were made available to consumers, namely the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro and the Asus Zenfone AR. ARCore on the other hand, doesn’t need additional sensors in order to work. As a result, it can be compatible with even more devices. Google recently released a Measure app for all ARCore supported smartphones.
Google isn't the only one dabbling in AR. Apple also has its own AR platform called ARKit. The company recently unveiled the next version of the platform called ARKit 2, which now comes with a slew of new features like shared experiences, persistent AR and more.
