Nikon announces seven new Coolpix cameras, most with Wi-Fi goodness

Nikon refreshes the Coolpix series with an interesting lineup of cameras.

Nikon has announced a refresh to its Coolpix lineup with seven new cameras, across categories, from entry-level to rugged and ultrazoom offerings.

The seven new cameras are the Coolpix S5200, Coolpix L28, Coolpix S31, Coolpix AW110, Coolpix P520, Coolpix L820, Coolpix S9500 and Coolpix S6500.

A major addition to this range includes Wi-Fi support which is seen on four out of these cameras. Let us see what each of these cameras has to offer:

 

Entry level contenders

Nikon Coolpix S5200

This is a refresh of the older S4300 and has a 16.1MP backside illuminated (BSI) CMOS sensor. It features a 6x (26mm to 156mm) optical zoom lens and has a 3-inch LCD screen. Pictures can be transferred wirelessly using the camera built-in Wi-Fi adapter and the Wireless Mobile Adapter utility. In terms of shooting modes, it offers the basic Auto and Program modes.

Nikon Coolpix L28

This is a basic 20.1MP camera sporting a CCD sensor. It comes with a 3-inch LCD, 5x optical zoom (26mm to 130mm). This camera is meant for entry level users who do not have a decent cellphone camera and it takes in two AA batteries.

Ultrazoom beasts
Nikon Coolpix P250

This is the flagship Coolpix device sporting an 18 MP backside illuminated (BSI) CMOS sensor, a whopping 42x optical zoom (that’s also found on the older P510) going from 24mm to 1000mm (35mm equivalent). The device sports a 3.2-inch vari-angle LCD screen, features lens-shift vibration reduction and its ISO range goes from 80 to 3200. It houses a GPS adapter and you can transfer images and videos wirelessly using the WU-1a wireless adapter for which you will have to pay separately.

Nikon Coolpix L820

This is a lower-end ultrazoom camera featuring a 16MP CMOS sensor, 30x optical zoom (22.5mm to 675mm), a fixed 3-inch LCD screen and a dedicated video record button. It comes with all the PASM modes and takes in four AA batteries. Its ISO range goes from 80 – 3200.

Nikon Coolpix S9500

This ultra-slim offering from Nikon offers 22x optical zoom (25-550mm) and features an 18.1 MP BSI CMOS sensor. A travel-zoom worthy of its name it features a 3-inch OLED screen, 1080p video recording resolution, built-in Wi-Fi and GPS options and ISO range going from 125 – 1600.

Rugged waterproof shooters
Nikon Coolpix S31

A 10.1MP shooter meant for family use, it is housed in a compact and durable body which is waterproof up to 16.5 feet, shockproof and dustproof. It offers a nominal 3x optical zoom (29-87mm) and a dedicated video-record button. The 2.7-inch LCD is fixed and it has image editing filters which can be applied to images as well as videos.

  • Pricing: USD 119.95 (Rs. 6,700 approx)

Nikon Coolpix AW110

The Coolpix AW110 is a durable point and shoot camera meant for rugged outdoor use. It is waterproof (up to 59 feet), shockproof (up to 6.7 feet) and freeze proof down to -14 degrees Fahrenheit or -25 degrees Celcius. On the features front also it packs in a punch with a 16 MP BSI CMOS sensor, a 3-inch OLED screen, 5x optical zoom, lens-shift vibration reduction, full HD video recording capability and so on. And yes, it also offers Wi-Fi and GPS functionalities.

  • Pricing: USD 349.95 (Rs.19,500 approx )

All these cameras are expected to launch in February in the US. India launch dates are yet not known.
