Meta is up to something these days. After its many recent stints, like Meta AI for example, it has now unveiled the Meta Horizon OS. How is it different from other mixed reality tech? What Meta is doing differently from others is that it has combined mixed reality with social features, something that it specialises in.
This is not something that Meta came up with out of the blue. It has been working on developing next-generation computing platforms for a while now. High-resolution Passthrough, Scene Understanding, and Spatial Anchors are some key features that Meta has focused on.
According to Meta, the Meta Horizon OS offers a plethora of custom frameworks and tools. There are multiple immersive apps and experiences that creators can use for their benefit.

Meta is known for its social platforms and it has integrated the same with the Meta Horizon OS too. The Horizon social layer will allow users to maintain their virtual identities and friend groups seamlessly across platforms. This is a good thing even for developers as they can enhance their apps using these social features. This can facilitate cross-platform interactions too.
Developers and creators have the opportunity to use Meta Horizon OS’s custom frameworks and tools. Meta has made access to both Meta Horizon Store and App Lab easier for developers so that they can publish their software. Not just this, the Meta Horizon OS integrates popular gaming services and facilitates wireless streaming of PC software to headsets.
ASUS’ Republic of Gamers and Lenovo are designing products for this, and Xbox and Meta will partner for a limited-edition Meta Quest inspired by Xbox.
