Netflix and Marvel have bad news for its fans as they enjoy the premiere of the third season of Daredevil.

Dear Marvel fan, brace yourself for some hard-hitting news: Netflix and Marvel have announced that Luke Cage will not return for a third season. This news comes a week after Netflix and Marvel’s announcement to drop Iron Fist for a third season. If it’s any consolation, Netflix is presently premiering the third season of Daredevil, the first of The Defenders TV show in a partnership with Disney and Marvel.

Netflix and Marvel said in a statement to Deadline, “Unfortunately, Marvel's Luke Cage will not return for a third season. Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is grateful to the dedicated showrunner, writers, cast and crew who brought Harlem's Hero to life for the past two seasons, and to all the fans who have supported the series.”

The two American web series, one surrounding a martial arts expert gifted with the mystical power of the ‘Iron Fist’ and another surrounding Luke Cage, a former convict with superhuman strength were expected eagerly by fans to make a return in a third season, but we learn now that it will not be the case. Although Netflix was initially planning to create a third season of both shows, it decided not to because of creative differences.

Disney, Marvel’s parent company, is planning to launch its own direct-to-consumer video streaming service and move all Marvel feature films from Netflix to the new service, reports The Hollywood Reporter. At the moment though, Daredevil, Jessica Jones and The Punisher are set to stay on Netflix under terms of the original plan. Keep your fingers crossed if you’re a Netflix patron and are very fond of these shows.
