Netflix acquires Millarworld Comics, creators of Kingsman, Kick-Ass, Old Man Logan and Wanted
Some popular comic book heroes are all set to get the Netflix treatment as the streaming service acquires Millarworld Comics. Here's what's in store for franchises like Wanted, Reborn, Huck, Empress and more
Netflix has made its first ever major acquisition which will allow the streaming service to bring some well known comic book legends to life on its platform. The terms of the deal are still undisclosed, but Netflix has managed to bag Millarworld Comics, the publishing house created by artist Mark Millar.
Mark Millar is known for his work on various popular comic book characters and stories including – Kingsman, Kick-ass, Old Man Logan and Wanted. Millar also help create the Civil War and Fantastic Four miniseries for Marvel. Wanted, one of Millar’s original works, was also adapted into a feature film in 2008. Remember the film starring James McAvoy, Morgan Freeman and Angelina Jolie? The one in which everyone knows how to bend bullets? Kick-ass was also adapted to a feature film in 2010, with a sequel in 2013. Apart from these, Kingsman also got a feature film release in 2014, with a sequel slated to premiere this year in September.
Netflix aims to bring character franchises from Millarworld to the streaming service in the form of live-action films, TV series and kids’ shows. Announcing the acquisition, Netflix posted a video teaser on Twitter, which showcased some of the Millarworld comic books which could translate to content on the streaming platform. These include – American Jesus, Jupiter’s Legacy, Huck, Empress, Reborn, Wanted, SuperCrooks, Nemesis and more.

However, don’t expect Kings-Man and Kick-Ass to get the Netflix treatment. In a blogpost talking about the acquisition, Miller wrote, “Kingsman and Kick-Ass have unique Hollywood deals elsewhere and aren’t a part of this particular acquisition.”
“As creator and re-inventor of some of the most memorable stories and characters in recent history, ranging from Marvel’s The Avengers to Millarworld’s Kick-Ass, Kingsman, Wanted and Reborn franchises, Mark is as close as you can get to a modern day Stan Lee,” said Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos. “We can’t wait to harness the creative power of Millarworld to Netflix and start a new era in global storytelling.”
Millar seemed quite excited about the Netflix buyout. He closed his blogpost saying, “Comics have been my passion my entire life. I started working with them as a teenager and I’ve never been more excited about where we’re going next as Millarworld joins the Netflix team. These guys are going to take Millarworld to the next level and I feel like Richard Dreyfuss, wide-eyed and walking around the mothership at the end of Close Encounters when I see their global plans and it’s crazy-exciting to be a part of it.”
