Narendra Modi reportedly looks into slow Internet speed in India

According to reports, the PMO is now looking into the reasons why Internet speed is among the lowest in the world. With Modi now himself trying to address the problem, will the broadband speeds improve in India? How soon will it happen?

It's not only you who is worried about the slow Internet speeds in the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, known for his extensive social media presence, has now taken up the matter and directed officials concerned to figure out factors behind “the inability of operators to provide advertised internet speeds” in the country.

“ A report based on a study to examine the reasons for slow broadband speeds had been prepared and submitted for approval. But after the meeting in the PMO, a further analysis is being undertaken to find out if the lack of spectrum was hampering speeds,” A Hindustan Times reports quotes a source as saying.

The development comes in the wake of demands from telecom operators for releasing more spectrum. It's notable the telecom regulator had recently raised the minimum broadband speed limit from 256kbps to 512kbps. The regulator also amended the Telecom Consumers Complaint Redressal Regulations, 2012, which will be now known as the Telecom Consumers Complaint Redressal (Third Amendment) Regulations, 2014.

According to a recent Akamai report, India had 2Mbps average speed, lowest in Asia Pacific region. India had also the lowest peak speed in the region at 13.9 Mbps.

The BJP government has coined a 'Digital India' campaign that focusses on expanding telecommunications coverage in the country. Among many steps under the initiative is to digitally connect all the panchayats in the country. However, slow Internet speeds has emerged as major hurdle for the Digital India initiative.
