We’ve written books and songs about the space and once films were technologically competent enough to show us what it would look like, filmmakers jumped at the chance. As a species, it is in our DNA to want to explore and even though we can’t really make it to space, right now, with these must-watch space exploration films, you can feel it.
Directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland of Ex Machina fame, Sunshine tells the story of a crew of space explorers who have to journey towards the sun in an effort to restart the dead star to prevent the Earth from freezing over. Tense and thought-provoking, Sunshine also features a stellar cast who are exemplary in their roles as space explorers.
Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece, 2001: A Space Odyssey is a wild and thought-provoking trip through space and the human condition. A complicated film, 2001: A Space Odyssey is the quintessential science fiction story that tracks the course of a spaceship held hostage by a malevolent AI called HAL. It’s not as straight forward as you think and is more of an allegory of man and his desire for immortality and beyond. A must-watch if you’re a fan of thought-provoking sci-fi.
A box office hit, Interstellar shows us that deep and affecting films can make a difference. Directed by visionary director, Christopher Nolan, the film tells the story of a team of astronauts that are leaving Earth in search of habitable planets to where the human race can eventually migrate because the earth is no longer fit for human habitation. Also, Matthew McConaughey truly delivers the performance of a lifetime in this film.
Jupiter’s moon, Europa has long been thought to harbour untapped liquid resources in the form of water and this films takes that idea and runs wild with. A crew of astronauts makes the arduous journey towards their destination but is not prepared for what they actually find. Part sci-fi and part horror, the film deals with the idea that something dangerous may exist under the frozen wastes of the distant satellite.
