Planetes
One of the more grounded science fiction stories in the manga, Planetes tells the tale of humanity in the future, specifically the year 2075. Space travel is now common and humans have been tasked with mining operations on the moon and beyond. The stories in Planetes are more grounded in reality and focus more on the hopes and dreams of real people. The artwork is stunning and some of the stories are incredibly hard-hitting. A must-read for fans of realistic sci-fi.
Battle Angel Alita
An action-packed thrill ride, Battle Angel Alita is another very influential piece of work in manga. The story of a war robot being reduced and given a second chance at life, Battle Angel Alita is as iconic as it is influential. Originally published in 1990, the series has been turned into a successful anime show and even a big-budget Hollywood film. But, if you’re looking for the original, then you can’t go wrong with the manga.
