Must-read Manga titles

Updated on 01-May-2020

There is something about Manga that draws readers in. From the detailed and often exaggerated art to the winding stories and cool-looking character designs, Manga has permeated film, tv, and even video games. Manga is essentially a Japanese comic book and is often serialized in magazines in Japan. These serialized episodes are then collected into a volume. Some Manga have even transcended the genre and are now staples in modern pop culture. So, without further ado, here are 4 must-read Manga that you should definitely check out.

Berserk

Berserk is written and illustrated by Kentaro Miura. The manga started back in the 80s and is still running to this day. Berserk stands as its own story and is an incredibly influential book with its larger than life characters and deep, affecting storylines. The art is amazing and captures the kinetic action on the page. If you consider yourself a fan of manga, you should not miss Berserk.

Vinland Saga

One of the historically accurate mangas out there, Vinland Saga is a long and detailed look at life during the Viking age. It was violent, bloody and deceitful. The story follows Thorfinn, who is out for revenge since the death of his father at the hands of Askeladd, a tribal warlord. What follows is chapter after chapter of pulse-pounding action and some excellent storytelling. If you even have a passing fad in the Viking age, you should definitely check out Vinland Saga.

Akira

Akira is responsible for a lot of young children getting into manga at an early age. The book was one of the most important landmarks in art in Japan and the subsequent animated feature that followed only cemented its place as the must-read manga of its generation. The story of telekinetic power gone horribly wrong, Akira is a must-read even if you’re not a fan of manga simply because of how good it actually is.

Vagabond

Stylish, action-packed and peppered with moments of quiet reflection, Vagabond is a manga that you should not miss out on. The manga tells the story of Miyamoto Mushashi, one of the most revered sword-fighters of his time. It takes us through his life from when he was a ruthless killer to a pensive poet. With art that could deck the walls of your house, vagabond is a sight to behold and read and should not be missed out on.
