Movies that have comic book origins

We all love comic book movies. From the MCU to DC’s big-budgeted fare, comic books have taken over our theatres and even TV screens. But, there are a ton of films that you may not have known actually had comic book origins. As comic books started taking the world by storm, Hollywood saw a formula for success and ran with it. This led to a wave of great comic books films that you may not even know of. Well, we’ve compiled a list of some films that have comic book origins. Here we go.

Dredd 3D

When Dredd 3D came out in cinemas, not many folks went to watch it. Blame it on bad marketing or promotion, there was one thing that this movie did extremely well. It accurately captured the spirit and mean-streak of comic books. The story starts off in Mega City One where Dredd and other Judges patrol the street as future police officers. A drug bust goes wrong and one thing leads to the other and all hell breaks loose. Check it out if you want something different from your usual Marvel offerings.

Watchmen

When the Watchmen comic book first came out in the late 80s, it caused a shift in the comic book industry. Comics weren’t seen as children’s books anymore and Watchmen appealed to an older demographic. The film is a faithful recreation of the comic with a few details changed. What makes the film great is that it never tries to be something it isn’t and just retells the story of the comic. Check it out if you want to see what superheroes would actually be like in real life.

League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

Starring Sean Connery and Naseeruddin Shah, the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was not the most faithful adaptation of the source material but it did have its own charm. The story follows the exploits of literature's most famous characters such as Mr Hyde, Captain Nemo and more as they go up against the dastardly genius of Moriarty, the arch-nemesis of Sherlock Holmes.

A History of Violence

Directed by acclaimed director, David Cronenberg, A History of Violence is also based on a lesser-known graphic novel. The story largely follows the comic as a former hitman must face the demons of his past as his old life comes calling. It’s a great film with excellent pacing and direction and a fantastic performance by Viggo Mortensen as the protagonist.
