Microsoft testing ‘Ultimate Performance’ power scheme in Windows 10

Microsoft has released Windows 10 Insider Build 17101 RS4 (Redstone 4) for Fast ring users, and Build 17604 RS5 (Redstone 5) for those who have chosen to Skip Ahead. While the update does add a bunch of new features, the most notable is a new power scheme for professionals. It is called ‘Ultimate Performance’ and is available only for workstations running Windows 10 Pro. According to the company’s official blog post, the new power scheme will offer “absolute maximum performance” and is geared towards reducing “micro-latencies.” The company also notes that the power scheme may directly impact hardware and is not available on battery powered systems.

“Demanding workloads on workstations always desire more performance. As part of our effort to provide the absolute maximum performance we’re introducing a new power policy called Ultimate Performance. Windows has developed key areas where performance and efficiency tradeoffs are made in the OS. Over time, we’ve amassed a collection of settings which allow the OS to quickly tune the behavior based on user preference, policy, underlying hardware or workload,” the company noted in its blog.

The Ultimate Performance Power Plan is selectable either by an OEM on new systems, or directly by a user. It will be available under the Power Options tab, inside the Control Panel. Microsoft adds that the contents of the Ultimate Performance policy can be customised by the user. Further, the company also says that it will continue to tune and evaluate the power plan settings and invites users to submit their feedback. 

Besides this, the new Preview Build also brings a bunch of new features such as new emoji design, emoji search support fo new locations, more control over Windows App permissions, and more.
