After testing the latest Windows 10 "Fall Creators Update" over the past six months, Microsoft has released the latest edition to secure over 500 million Windows 10 devices globally, starting with new machines first.
"For the best experience, we recommend you wait until Windows 10 is automatically offered to your device. You don't have to do anything to get the update; it will roll out automatically to you through 'Windows Update' if you've chosen to have updates installed automatically on your device," Microsoft wrote in a blog post late on Tuesday.
Also known as "Windows 10 Version 1709", this iteration of Windows 10 brings changes to the overall design and usability of Windows 10. The company has added a number of new features to improve Microsoft's digital assistant Cortana, Edge and Photos. The new update also makes the OS more secure and includes Mixed Reality (MR) support.
Some key features of the Fall Creators update include –
Photos Remix: Photos Remix uses AI and deep learning to organise and transform your photo and video albums into stories. Select your photos and videos, drop in music, transitions and 3D effects. Click a button and voila — see a new edit of your album. You can also create mixed reality by adding animated 3D objects to your photos and videos.
Windows Mixed Reality: Windows Mixed Reality is Microsoft's take on VR. There are various Mixed Reality headsets available from third-party vendors such as HP and Acer. Both the HP and Acer headsets feature LCD displays as opposed to OLED displays that are used in the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. We had a chance to experience the headsets at Build 2017 and they were quite impressive. The controllers that were announced at Build 2017, they support full six degrees of freedom and do not require an external camera to track them.
3D in Windows: With the Fall Creators Update you have the most complete collection of 3D tools and resources available – everything you need to create, remix, and share in 3D. With the Fall Creators Update, you can: easily create and remix 3D objects, view your 3D creations in the real world, add 3D to Office files for visual impact and add 3D to photos and videos for fun and impact.
Windows Ink gets better: With the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, users can now ink directly onto PDFs. Smart Ink also allows users to make the squares you draw more perfect, or automatically turn boxes that you’ve doodled into a table.
Windows works across your devices: All your files can be seen in File Explorer and accessed on-demand whenever they are needed. Log out of one device and Cortana asks if you want to continue working in your app, doc or website on your next device. Plus, you can copy and paste between connected devices from your clipboard
Users who do not want to wait for the update to roll out automatically can manually check for updates on PC. However, it will only work if the device is eligible to get the "Fall Creators Update" as part of the initial roll out phase. Alternatively, the user can manually get the update via the Software Download Site, the company added.
