Meta has confirmed that it laid off employees across several teams on Wednesday as part of an effort to reallocate resources within the company. The company explained that these layoffs were aimed at aligning with its long-term strategic goals. The affected teams include those working on Threads, recruiting, legal operations, and design, according to posts on social media announcing the layoffs.
“Today, a few teams at Meta are making changes to ensure resources are aligned with their long-term strategic goals and location strategy,” a Meta spokesperson told TechCrunch in an emailed statement. “This includes moving some teams to different locations, and moving some employees to different roles. In situations like this when a role is eliminated, we work hard to find other opportunities for impacted employees.”

Although Meta did not disclose the exact number of employees affected, one former worker shared that more than a dozen members of their team were laid off through video calls. Some of the impacted employees reportedly received six weeks of severance pay.
In addition to the teams mentioned, employees from Meta’s Reality Labs, Instagram, and WhatsApp divisions were also hit by the layoffs, according to a report from The Verge.
This round of layoffs follows a series of workforce reductions at Meta in recent years. In 2022, the company cut around 13% of its workforce, which amounted to 11,000 employees. CEO Mark Zuckerberg took personal responsibility for the decision. Another wave of layoffs followed in 2023, with Meta letting go of 10,000 more employees and withdrawing 5,000 open roles that had not yet been filled.

Meta’s recent layoffs indicate the company is continuing to streamline operations and focus on its long-term goals, despite already having made substantial cuts to its workforce over the past two years.
