As our parents say, the internet has its benefits but it also has a dark side. As much as people are benefitting from the rise of the internet, the negativity of the same has reached almost everyone. Every other day, we hear about deepfakes and images being morphed and whatnot. To tackle the same, the major tech companies in the world are trying to raise awareness. In a similar move, Meta began to label AI-generated images in order to deal with this issue. This was announced by the company in February. However, it seems like they messed up.

Made with Meta AI

A recent TechCrunch report has revealed that Meta has been facing significant backlash from users over the fact that it is tagging genuine pictures as “Made with AI”. The feature which is supposed to help users, is in turn creating more confusion and chaos. Users have reported that their human-made or minimally edited images are being incorrectly flagged by Meta’s new AI detection system. The tag is only visible on mobile apps for now and this adds to the confusion.

An example closer to home is when a photo of the Kolkata Knight Riders team celebrating their Indian Premier League Cricket tournament win, was incorrectly tagged as “Made with AI.”

Made with Meta AI

Meta has taken all this feedback into consideration and has said that it will ensure that its auto-generated “Made with AI” tags are not used out of place. Speaking to TechCrunch, a Meta spokesperson said, “Our intent has always been to help people know when they see content that has been made with AI. We are taking into account recent feedback and continue to evaluate our approach.”
