Meta AI can now deepfake your videos, are we letting AI go too far?
HIGHLIGHTS

Meta AI's new deepfake feature that will translate video content on Instagram and Facebook.

The feature was announced by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg at Meta Connect last night.

It seems like we are letting AI go a little too far and giving it more control than most people wish for.

With the increasing use and misuse of AI in the current scenario, we often find ourselves confused if we ever need more advancements in AI or not. While we will get a definite answer in time, more and more announcements follow, and some of them are very concerning. The latest to join the list is Meta AI’s deepfake feature that will translate video content on Instagram and Facebook from Spanish to English, or vice versa. The feature was announced by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg at Meta Connect last night and will first be tested in the US and Latin America.

According to Meta, this AI tool will automatically “simulate the speaker’s voice in another language and sync their lips to match.” While this may sound exciting for now, the ability poses a threat of misuse to create fake videos and their usage to spread misinformation.

For those unaware, Meta AI is an AI assistant that is built-in in Meta apps such as WhatsApp, Instagram, etc. It could earlier easily respond to text prompts and even generate images directly in your chat. Now, it will be able to process image inputs and it will even answer your questions about the photos and edit them.

However, it seems like we are letting AI go a little too far and giving it more control than most people wish for.

Another new feature announced by Meta will for Instagram and Facebook directly drop AI-generated images in your feed  “based on your interests or current trends”, allowing you to “tap a suggested prompt to take that content in a new direction or swipe to imagine new content in real-time.”

During the event, it wasn’t clarified if Meta would ask for people’s consent before converting around with their content. Currently, we are already dealing with the flooding of fake content on social media and I just feel that this can create more confusion. Where will we draw the line of what’s real or not? What do you think about it?
