McAfee reports AI-powered scams, 12 fake texts targeting Indians daily reveal dark side of technology

As much as we hate it, online and AI scams are growing by the day. No one is safe these days. The scammers have really smart ways and can trick even the most aware of the lot. Every day we hear news of someone or the other being a victim of fraud. Recently, McAfee conducted a study on this. Let’s find out more and increase our awareness to dodge these fraudulent bullets.

The recently conducted McAfee study reflects that Indians on average receive 12 scam messages daily via email, texts, or social media. 12 such messages every day! The study even revealed the types of scams Indians mostly fall for. See, bank notifications and even offers are something that almost all of us check. So that is one major way in which people fall for the scams. Secondly, the other way in which most people fall for scams is through job offers. 52% of people fall for bank alert scams while 62% of people fall for job scams.
Scammers are now using AI to lure users into their traps. The main reason that has been identified because of which people fall for these scams is that these messages look really authentic. People say that it has become really difficult to identify fake messages now, thanks to AI.

The study further revealed that an Indian user spends about 105 minutes on social media, texts, and emails every week to go through, spot, and decide whether a message is authentic or a scam. This roughly translates to two full work weeks spent on this.
The data revealed by the study is shocking, to say the least. As online scams get more common, we should be highly careful while dealing with anything online.
