HIGHLIGHTS

Lionsgate has soft launched its own OTT streaming app in India for Rs 99 a month

Called Lionsgate Play, the app is available on both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store

The full launch of the app will take place in the first week of December

Back in July, we reported that Lionsgate had partnered up with JioFiber and Airtel to deliver a wide slate of content that is also localized. Basically, JioFiber customers received access to Lionsgate Play’s blockbuster lineup of Hollywood films and other popular movies on JioTV+. Lionsgate Play is essentially a premium streaming service from Lionsgate India and Starz, offers curated Hollywood content for Indian consumers, with much of the content available in multiple Indian languages as well. But now, Lionsgate has launched its own app called Lionsgate Play in India. It is available on both the Google Play Store and the Apple App store as well.

The app just had a soft launch so do not expect the full feature set as well as a slate of content to be available right now. We downloaded the app on Android for a subscription of Rs 99 per month and then received access to a bunch of Hollywood movies. We noticed a ton of genres from your typical blockbusters to more indie fare. These shows and films are also available with localized language dubs for the various audiences in India. Regional-speaking cinema lovers can enjoy Lionsgate Play’s blockbuster movies, including  The Hunger Games franchise, John Wick series, Knives Out, La La Land, The Twilight Saga and many more, in Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Bhojpuri as well. Clearly, localisation is one of the key selling points of the service. Lionsgate has also stated that the pricing is still tentative at the moment and are not the finalized plans.

Users can opt for a 14-day trial, while the monthly subscription rate comes in at Rs 99 with an annual subscription of Rs 699, but as explained above, these prices are tentative. Again, do note that this is a soft launch with a full-fledged launch planned for the first week of December as stated by a Lionsgate representative. While the app has just been launched in India, it isn't the full line up of content and features with more to be added as the app heads towards a full launch in December.
