LG Display has unveiled an interesting new stretchable display technology that pushes the limits of what’s possible with screens. Unveiled at LG Science Park in Seoul, the new display prototype can expand up to 50 percent, setting a new record for the highest stretchability in the industry, according to LG.

Stretchable displays are considered the future of flexible screen technology. They can be twisted, folded, and stretched into different shapes, offering immense design potential. The new prototype by LG features a 12-inch screen that can stretch up to 18 inches. Despite the expansion, it is said to maintain high resolution and full RGB (red, green, blue) colour quality at 100ppi (pixels per inch).

Compared to LG Display’s first prototype in 2022, which had a maximum stretch of 20 percent, this new panel can stretch 50 percent. By applying new technologies, like improving the silicon material used in contact lenses and developing a new wiring structure, LG Display has significantly increased the stretchability of the screen, surpassing the initial goal of a 20 percent elongation rate.

The prototype also features a durable micro-LED light source that is just 40 micrometers wide, allowing the display to withstand over 10,000 stretches without losing clarity.

The display is said to maintain clear image quality in extreme conditions like high or low temperatures and physical shocks. Stretchable displays are not only lightweight but also thin enough to adhere to curved surfaces, such as clothing or skin, making them perfect for applications in industries like fashion, wearables, and mobility.

The company demonstrated several possible uses for the technology, including an automotive panel that can stretch into a convex shape and a wearable display for firefighters that shows real-time information.

LG Display was selected as the lead company for the national project to develop Stretchable displays in 2020 and since then has been conducting joint R&D with 19 domestic industry and research institutes.

“We will continue to build a sustainable future display ecosystem through close cooperation between South Korean industry, academia, and research stakeholders,” said Soo-young Yoon, CTO and Executive Vice President of LG Display.
