HIGHLIGHTS

A report by the Delhi-based Kutniti Foundation has issued a report over Starlink’s arrival in India.

It highlights the fact that Starlink has deep connections to the US intelligence agencies and the US military.

It even highlights that if Starlink is allowed to operate in India then it will give the US geopolitical leverage.

Elon Musk’s Starlink has been trying to get into the Indian market for a while now and has now come pretty close to completing all the government formalities. It promises to connect remote and underserved regions in India with high-speed data. However, a report by the Delhi-based Kutniti Foundation has issued a report over Starlink’s arrival in India and that has raised some concerns over Starlink’s arrival in India. It has even cited some serious national security concerns.

Kutniti Foundation’s report highlights the fact that Starlink has deep connections to the US intelligence agencies and the US military. It shared that if Starlink is allowed to operate in India, then there are possible chances of surveillance, data interception, and the disruption of critical infrastructure. Further, Starlink offers a dual-use technology that can be used for both civilians and the military. The think tank highlighted its potential for misuse and raised an alarm over it.

The report even highlights that if Starlink is allowed to operate in India then it will give the US geopolitical leverage. It alleged that the service operates as part of a broader US strategy for global dominance in space and terrestrial communications. This can lead to great foreign influence on India, the report said. Then it also raised concerns over data privacy and questioned if Starlink can offer adequate data protection under US laws that prioritise national security.

Allowing Starlink to exist in India also comes with its benefits. It can deliver connectivity to even the remotest areas in India. The question of allowing technological advancements while at the same time taking care of national security has been raised in this report. Let’s see how the Indian government reacts to these concerns.
