Kim Dotcom (formerly of the MegaUpload fame) has announced his new Mega cloud storage service has released its first official plugin and it’s headed straight to the Firefox browser.
The Mega browser extension, which has been ‘preliminary reviewed’ by Firefox maker Mozilla, is billed as ‘secure and invisible’. Firefox users who are registered on the new cloud service are encouraged to install the plugin. The plugin promises to help vastly improve the download experience and will allow users to batch download an unlimited number of files without any restrictions.
If you’ve been following the development of Mega via Kim Dotcom’s Twitter feed (you really should if you don’t), you would notice som very interesting things coming up. The Firefox extension is just the first of many. What’s coming next, according to the feed, is an open source sync app for the cloud service. There is no ETA on the app, but rest assured its coming.
Currently, Mega offers two types of accounts, paid and free. While the free account gives 50GB of cloud storage free of charge, the paid service is broken down into three tiers depending on how much storage you want. It offers Pro 1 tier, with 500GB of storage and 1TB of bandwidth for 9.99 euros a month. Pro 2 tier will give you 2TB of storage and 4TB of bandwidth while setting you back 19.99 Euros per month. The third tier, Pro 3 offers 4TB of storage and 8TB of bandwidth and will cost 30 Euros per month.
Just a note of caution though, Mega is not the replacement for Megaupload, which had earned a reputation for itself as a pirate’s haven. Mega has been promptly processing any and all take-down notices it has received for any material that has been violating the copyright laws, so if you plan on using the new service for no good, then you might be in for a shock. However, it is nice to have a 50 gig storage solution available, because we all know; we can never have enough cloud storage.
