Apple has released eight different models as a part of its OpenELM.

I am running short of coming up with something new for every AI news that come across. Everyone has gone so crazy about it, on most days that’s the only news that comes to our newsroom. Well today, we are going to talk about Apple, one company that is sort of a late bloomer in the AI class. However, it is now trying to rise the ranks and fill up the blank space. Apple just unveiled its own OpenELM (Open-source Efficient Language Models) today, which included several open-source large language models (LLMs). These LLMs are specifically designed for on-device use.

There has been a lot of chatter about Apple developing LLMs for on-device use for a while now, especially around the upcoming iOS 18 update. With its latest release, Apple has confirmed that those rumours were indeed true. Apple took a different route from the popularly used cloud-based AI systems to make sure that there is enhanced privacy and efficiency.

Apple’s different AI LLM models

AI

Apple has released eight different models as a part of its OpenELM. These are all available on the Hugging Face Hub. The California-based tech company trained four of these using the CoreNet library, while the remaining four underwent instruction tuning. This strategy uses a layer-wise scaling strategy, strategically allocating parameters within each layer of the transformer model to boost both accuracy and efficiency.

Lead researcher on the OpenELM project, Dr. Sophia Lee, said, “OpenELM represents a milestone in AI research,” Dr. Lee stated. “By providing comprehensive resources, including code, training logs, and multiple model versions, we aim to foster faster advancements and foster greater trust in natural language processing.”

However, there’s still time before Apple actually includes AI features in their devices. But word on the street is that it can happen soon, with the announcement of iOS 18. Hence the hush-hush from Apple. Let’s wait and see how things go.
