Intel today announced Thunderbolt 3 that uses the same port design as the USB Type-C port.
Delivering up to maximum speeds of 40 Gbps, Thunderbolt 3 offers double the speed of the previous generation, USB 3.1 10 Gbps, and DisplayPort 1.2. After the USB group introduced the USB-C connector, Thunderbolt 3 is coming to the USB Type-C port also, aiming to provide an universal solution to the probable upcoming standard of ports.
Thunderbolt 3 will be available to support dual 4K 60 Hz displays and quick notebook charging up to 100W with a single cable. It also provides a peer-to-peer connection at 10 GbE speeds. The USB 3.1 port will be compatible with existing USB devices and cables and the same stands for the previous generations of DisplayPort 1.2. Earlier, Thunderbolt 2 provided up to a maximum speeds of 20 Gbps while USB 3.1 provided up to 10 Gbps.
Thunderbolt 3 is expected to start shipping by the end of this year, and start in full swing in 2016.
