Explore and interact with an Ikea kitchen using HTC Vive VR headset.

On Tuesday, Ikea launched a pilot virtual reality app called the Ikea VR Experience, as the new set of HTC Vive headsets began shipping. The app was built using the Unreal Engine from Epic games and is launched on Valve’s world leading game platform Steam. Players wear the Vive headset and enter into a virtual Ikea kitchen of real-world size. There is the ‘child mode’ which lest you view the kitchen from the height of a kid as well, and this helps to relive your childhood feels of exploring stuff in the kitchen.

Ikea already offers customers several 3D planning tools to help design and visualise kitchens, wardrobes and storage areas, but this VR experience is clearly one of a kind!

In a recent press release, Jesper Brodin, MD at Ikea, Sweden, says ‘Virtual reality will play a major role in the future of our customers. For instance, someday, it could be used to enable customers try out a variety of home furnishing solutions before buying them’.

The Ikea VR experience is available as a free-to-play HTC Vive game on Steam. The app will be updated continuously until the pilot test ends in August.
