Can an AI create a better movie trailer than humans?

A movie trailer is all about evoking certain emotions in the human mind. The trailer for a thriller should be thrilling, the trailer for a comedy should be funny, the trailer for a horror movie should be scary, and so on. So, human involvement is necessary, and a trailer is meticulously cut from amongst scenes in the movie. Fox, however, decided that an artificial intelligence can do just as well, and who better to turn to, than IBM. The company’s Watson AI was put to work, analysing over 100 horror movies, to create a trailer for Fox’s upcoming movie, Morgan.

“There are patterns and types of emotions in horror movies that resonate differently with each viewer, and the intricacies and interrelation of these are what an AI system would have to identify and understand in order to create a compelling movie trailer,” wrote IBM’s John R. Smith, in a blog post.

Based on its learnings from the other 100 horror clips, Watson analysed the movie Morgan. The AI analysed characters, categorised scenes into 24 different emotions, and more, to create the trailer. The outcome is the video that you see below.
