Recently, the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) issued urgent warnings about significant security flaws found in Google Chrome and Android devices. CERT-In has identified critical vulnerabilities in different versions of Google Chrome and the Android operating system. These flaws can potentially allow cybercriminals to take control of your devices. The risks stem from issues within system components or from users unknowingly visiting malicious websites or downloading infected apps. If attackers succeed, they could access sensitive information, lock users out of their devices, or install harmful software.

According to the alerts, Google Chrome has several serious vulnerabilities, including Integer Overflow, problems in the V8 JavaScript engine, and Type Confusion. Users who visit certain rogue websites may unknowingly expose themselves to these threats, giving hackers the opportunity to exploit these weaknesses. The existing versions of Chrome on Windows, Mac, and Linux are at risk.
CERT-In has highlighted multiple vulnerabilities affecting various versions of Android, including Android 12, 12L, 13, 14, and 15. Critical components like Framework, Systemamp, and subcomponents from MediaTek and Qualcomm are impacted. Exploiting these vulnerabilities could allow attackers to gain elevated privileges, compromising personal data or locking users out of their devices.

Despite these alarming risks, there are steps you can take to protect your devices. CERT-In recommends that users immediately install updates released by Google and other manufacturers.
For Google Chrome, ensure you’re running the latest version: 129.0.6668.100 for Windows and Mac, and 129.0.6668.89 for Linux. You can check for updates by navigating to the ‘About’ section in Chrome and applying any available patches.
For Android devices, Google releases security patches based on the affected versions. Regularly check your device settings for system updates and install patches as they become available. Staying updated is important for safeguarding your devices against cyber threats.
