Have you recently received an email claiming to help you download your e-PAN card? If yes, you’re not alone. Scammers are taking advantage of the buzz around the Government of India’s new PAN 2.0 initiative to trick people with fake emails. While the PAN 2.0 upgrade introduces features like improved data protection, QR code integration, and a unified portal for a seamless experience, cybercriminals are using this opportunity to dupe unsuspecting individuals.
The Press Information Bureau (PIB) Fact Check has flagged a phishing scam where fraudulent emails, falsely posing as the Income Tax Department, lure recipients with a guide to download their e-PAN cards. If you’ve received such an email, don’t fall for it—it’s entirely fake. Here’s what you need to know and how you can protect yourself.
In a recent post shared on X (formerly known as Twitter), PIB Fact Check warned users about this phishing scam. The post read: “Have you also received an email asking you to download e-PAN Card? #PIBFactCheck: This Email is #Fake. Do not respond to any emails, links, calls & SMS asking you to share financial & sensitive information.”
The government has urged citizens to remain cautious and avoid engaging with such emails. These types of fake emails often aim to steal personal or financial information. If you come across suspicious emails or messages related to e-PAN cards or other financial services, it is recommended to report them immediately.
