Multiple vulnerabilities have been found in older versions of the browser, putting your device and personal data at serious risk. These flaws can allow hackers to take control of your system, run harmful software, or even crash your device completely.
What’s the issue?
Google Chrome’s desktop versions for Windows, macOS, and Linux released before 131.0.6778.139 and 131.0.6778.108 contain critical issues. Among the key vulnerabilities identified are “Type Confusion” in the browser’s V8 engine and “Use after Free” in its Translate feature.
Attackers can exploit these vulnerabilities by tricking you into visiting a malicious website. Once they gain access, they could run harmful programs or make your system unresponsive through a denial-of-service (DoS) attack.
Who is at risk?
Anyone using an outdated version of Google Chrome is vulnerable to these threats. If your Chrome browser version is older than 131.0.6778.139 or 131.0.6778.108, you’re at risk of being targeted by hackers.
What you should do
CERT-In has strongly advised users to update their Chrome browsers immediately. Thankfully, Google has already rolled out a fix to address these vulnerabilities. Here’s how you can update your browser:
- Open Google Chrome and click on the three vertical dots in the top-right corner.
- Go to Help and select About Google Chrome.
- Chrome will automatically check for updates. If an update is available, it will install it.
