Google’s AI-powered Search experience will let you generate images: Here’s how
HIGHLIGHTS

Google has announced that its AI-powered Search experience (SGE) will let you create images right from a text prompt.

With this feature, SGE can create up to four images from given the text.

Google also introduced written drafts in SGE.

As numerous companies have been offering text-to-image generation capabilities, Google is now entering the arena with its AI-powered Search experience (SGE). This innovation will allow users to easily generate images directly from text prompts, showcasing Google’s commitment to staying at the forefront of technological advancements.

“As we continue to experiment with bringing generative AI capabilities into Search, we’re testing new ways to get more done as you’re searching — like creating an image that can bring an idea to life,” the tech giant said in a blogpost on October 12.

Google SGE: Image creator

Once SGE receives the text, it will provide up to four generated images in the results. When you tap on any of those images, you’ll see how generative AI has expanded your initial given text with descriptive details. From there, you can even edit the description further to add more detail.

You will also get an option to create AI-generated images directly in Google Images. This feature is designed to appear when you’re searching for inspiration.

Google further acknowledged the transformative potential of AI while also emphasising the importance of introducing this technology responsibly. The company is actively incorporating safeguards into the AI experience and ensuring that the generation of images aligns with its prohibited use policy for generative AI. This policy includes the prevention of harmful or misleading content, reflecting Google’s commitment to ethical and responsible AI development.

Thus, every image generated through SGE will have metadata labelling and embedded watermarking to indicate that it was created by AI.

Google also introduced written drafts in SGE. This will allow you to make the draft shorter, or change the tone to be more casual.

It’s important to note that both the new features in SGE are rolling out to those who opted into the SGE experiment in English in the US.
