Google is yet to clarify what it intends to do with the in-development Fuchsia OS, but Swift support will appeal to a lot of potential developers.

Google is working to integrate Swift, an open-source programming language developed by Apple with its Fuchsia operating system. Fuchsia OS is in development and first appeared over a year ago. It is different from Android and Chrome OS. The Fuchsia OS runs on top of 'Zircon' kernel as opposed to Linux Kernel used by both Android and Chrome OS.

Fuchsia is believed to replace Android and Chrome OS and result in a single software across both mobile and desktop experiences offered by Google. Fuchsia already supports programming languages like Dart, a language similar to C developed by Google and other languages like C/C++ and Go. Now, it seems to be gaining support for Swift as well.

The support for Swift on Fuchsia was spotted on GitHub repository via a pull request adding Fuchsia OS support to the compiler. Android Police notes that the pull request was created by a Google employee and the search giant is intending to split it into several smaller pull requests in order to make it easier to review the code changes. The move was further clarified by Swift's creator Chris Lattner, who now works at Google hinting at the plan to have its own code.

By adding support for Swift, Fuchsia stands to benefit as it will become an appealing platform for developers already working on the programming language. However, Google is yet to clarify what it plans to do with the operating system and whether it will indeed replace Android and Chrome OS in the future. But it is evident that the operating system will have ambitions bigger than Android and could power new form of devices altogether.
