As per an estimate from the U.S. Geological Survey, there are about 500,000 earthquakes that occur across the planet in a year. Keeping this in mind, Google has now introduced earthquake summaries in search.
The next time you feel the ground shaking, you won’t have to call 5 of your friends to confirm if an earthquake occurred. All you will need to do is search for “earthquake”, or “earthquakes near me” on Google, and it will show you a summary of the event right on top of the search page.
Search results for earthquake will also include a shakemap of various areas that shook during the earthquake, along with the intensity of shakes felt in each area. Other information in the earthquake summary will include size of quake, map of affected areas and tips on navigating the aftermath. You will also be able to determine the epicenter of the earthquake using these search results.
In a recent blog post, Google wrote, “To give you the ability to confirm aftershocks in the hours and days after the event, we’ll also show information about other recent earthquakes to put the tremors into context. We hope that by displaying this result directly in Search, people will have fast and easy access to the information they need to stay safe in the face of an earthquake.”
