Google rolls out +1 recommendations across the web

Updated on 28-Jun-2012

While everyone is talking about Google’s I/O 2012 event, the Internet giant has started rolling out a new 1 recommendations feature across the web. Now when users hover over the 1 button on a website, whether you are signed in to Google or not, they can see recommendations for other content as well. Google’s new feature encourages users to check out new apps or other content on the site they are visiting. The 1 feature also highlights website content that is popular with other Google users.

Google’s 1’ing something has always been a fun and lightweight way to engage with online content. It’s also a powerful discovery tool, making it easier for friends to find the best content by showing social annotations in search results and ads, and now we’re taking it to the next level,” says Google Engineering Manager Julie Farago in a post on Google , while announcing the new feature of the 1 button.

“To keep these recommendations more relevant and on-topic, they will always refer to pages on the same domain or subdomain as the 1 button,” she added in a post on the Google Developers blog.

Sites which have already added the 1 button are not required to do anything to support the new feature. Recommendations feature will roll out across the 1 buttons for all users. The update will be available for all users in the next few weeks.

The new update comes weeks after Google came up with a dedicated Google share button, which enables website owners to help Google users easily share the site’s content on Google’s social network. Google had then said that Google share button is for users who may simply want to share but not endorse with a 1 button, for example news or controversial items.
